High Wycombe is well located on the M40 between Slough and Oxford. This area of the M40 has grown dramatically over the last 10 years due to the demand of large corporations to relocate out of London. The town of High Wycombe has stayed particularly rural within this rapid area of growth. High Wycombe is surrounded by some of the loveliest countryside in southern England. Situated in a deep valley, in the heart of the Chilterns, High Wycombe is the largest town in Buckinghamshire, having grown up during the 18th and 19th centuries around the furniture industry, and was once known as 'the furniture capital of England. 'Quite surprisingly for a town in "Leafy Buckinghamshire" Wycombe contains some considerably deprived areas and is a town that faces some social problems, and is often in the media regarding its high profile crime. In the 1960's the town centre was redeveloped. This involved tunneling the River Wye under concrete, and demolishing most of the old buildings in Wycombe�s town centre. Two shopping centres were built along with many new multi-storey car parks, office blocks, flyovers and roundabouts. Areas of quaint old cottages and grand period buildings have been replaced with a town centre which looked like any other built in the aesthetically challenged decade of the 60's. A few pleasant old buildings remain on the High Street, and on Frogmoor (although the original cast iron fountain and some Georgian buildings have gone). A current town centre regeneration project is bringing the Wye back to surface, and is focusing on conserving the town centre.
