Developed after World War II as a new town, it has existed as a settlement since the 8th century to house the displaced population of London where slums and bombsites were being cleared. On 4th February 1947 the Government purchased 5,910 acres of land and began work on the "New Town". The first new residents moved in April 1949 and the town continued its planned expansion through to the end of the 1980s

St. Mary's church was started in about 1140, it took 40 years to build.

James Snooks, (known as Robert - a corruption of 'that robber Snooks') the famous highwayman, was hanged in Boxmoor on March 11th 1802, the scene of his crime. You can still see his grave on the moor.

The Grand Union Canal was opened in 1805 and links the Midland canals with the Thames.

The Queen visited Hemel in July 1952 and laid a foundation stone at St. Barnabus Church in Adeyfield. An imaginative councillor named the adjacent shopping centre The Queen's Square. Guess what shape the parades of shops are in!

25 Longlands was the first house to be started in Hemel Hempstead New Town.

In 1997 it was Hemel Hempstead's 50th anniversary as a New Town.
